There was a time when The Black Keys were a duo. There was also a time when only a small group of music aficionados knew who they were and appreciated their throwback basement, bluesy, rock and roll sound. That was over 10 years ago. Over years of constant touring and producing consistently solid albums, they became synonymous with rock music of the 2000’s. Fuck the Foo Fighters. Sorry, I had to say it. Anyhow, their sound broke out and became mainstream enough that they began headlining festivals, and having their music featured on commercials, tv shows, etc, etc, etc.
I first heard the Vancouver based duo Japandroids a couple of years ago. Their sound stuck out to me immediately much like The Black Keys did to me in the early 2000’s. When I heard their new single “The House That Heaven Built”, I got this weird feeling that their raw and somewhat “underground” sound is at the cusp of drawing a larger and more mainstream crowd. Could this be their breakout hit? Maybe they’ll be the soundtrack to a future HBO series? Maybe not? Either way, their new track kicks ass and I’m really looking forward to their new album Celebration Rock which arrives in June. I haven’t seen them live but I wonder if they can compare to a live Black Keys show? If so, that’d ensure world domination in the near future.
Here are a few additional tracks to check out, including an old fashioned MP3 download of Art Czars:
