Die Antwoord Takes It To The Next-Level
I just came back from Hard NYC at Governors Island and to make a long story short, the whole event was great other than Maya’s hugely disappointing headlining set. To start with, the sound was horrible and then she failed to connect with the crowd. She actually managed to clear out a large portion of the audience within her first two songs. People literally just poured out of the place. It seems like a harsh review but given the quality of the other sets over the course of the day, she really had to do something spectacular to shine.
Zef rap-rave / Interweb phenomena Die Antwoord, on the other hand, completely took things to “the next-level“. To say their energy was high would be an understatement, the sound was GREAT and the performance including their outrageous shock-tactics was nothing short of mesmerizing. Don’t let their appearance fool you. Die Antwoord, who is Ninja, Yolandi Vi$er and DJ Hi-Tek are the real deal. What seemed like a joke when they first hit YouTube has been fully legitimized by sets similar to tonights during recent summer festival appearances, including a 20 minute set at Coachella. Although the album was available for free online, they’ve signed with Interscope and are preparing to release a remastered version of $O$ “fokken soon”. Definitely make it a point to check them out the next time they’re in your area.
Also available on TNLF is a 73 minute stream of Ninja and Yolandi on the 2008 MaxNormal.TV album Good Morning South Africa. Check that out here. Then watch the new video for Evil Boy here.
