Let's Eat Grandma at NOS Primavera Sound Porto

Let’s Eat Grandma: Snippets of NOS Primavera Sound

I’m sorry to tell you, I don’t do indie rock. I’m not a guitar guy (not since Sublime shifted me from rock to reggae). But I find people fascinating, and I like to think I can recognise creative and musical talent when I see it. So, I was delighted to have the opportunity to not only see live, but also to interview, the wittily-named Let’s Eat Grandma.

There will be more about them in the podcast we are making about our little excursion to NOS Primavera Sound in Porto, Portugal. This is only a snippet.

In the snippet, I want to say that a) these are two intelligent, creative & amusing artists, just at the beginning of their professional journey who, all being well, I think will continue to impress us in diverse ways and,

b) it’s welcome to see their virtuosity on diverse instruments and across a range of musical styles. My festival buddy and I had just been debating ‘novelty, variety and originality’ in musical genres, somewhat to the detriment of artists who shall remain nameless. He was pushing the line honor the gift x jordan why not 6 inner city of ‘we are old men, who don’t understand the hip new thing…jazz artists were panned for being messy, ill-disciplined & discordant, rock and roll was panned for being messy, ill-disciplined & discordant, punk was panned for being…etc., etc…’

And then we walked over to Grandma, each of whose subsequent songs truly sounded different from each other. They weren’t genre-hopping. I couldn’t label it as one thing or another. The sentiments varied, the instruments varied, their roles in performing varied, their on-stage antics varied, the rhythms & tone varied. And this old man thought it was good. You youngsters will probably get even more excited!
