Casper Caan teams up with Wheatus on a euphoric new single called “Bird Song”
Casper Caan is back with “Bird Song,” a euphoric new indie anthem made with fellow New Yorkers Wheatus. It starts in slightly unexpected territory, with a chant-like vocal before a Linn drum kicks in and the whole thing opens up into a bright, restless mix of jagged guitars, huge organs, and sing-along hooks.
There’s a lot happening here, but it never feels overstuffed. Caan’s bittersweet lyrics about leaving the past behind give the track its emotional centre, while the production keeps pushing forward with the kind of wide-eyed momentum that makes a fresh start feel genuinely possible. Somewhere in the middle, things loosen into a wild percussion break with a little early-’90s Madchester swirl thrown in for good measure.
“Bird Song” was written and produced by Caan alongside Wheatus frontman Brendan Brown, who adds electric guitar and those instantly familiar backing vocals. Drummer Mikey Jones, whose credits include Swervedriver and The Lemonheads, also joins in, while longtime engineer Arjun Agerwala handles the recording.
Since arriving with “Last Chance” in 2021, Caan has been building a sound that sits somewhere between indie rock, dance music and glossy vintage pop. His tracks have been remixed by Hot Chip and Passion Pit, featured in EA Sports’ FIFA franchise, and racked up more than 20 million streams.
“Bird Song” feels like a particularly strong distillation of that world: nostalgic without getting stuck in the past, polished without losing its rough edges, and just strange enough to keep you guessing. It’s big-hearted, hooky and slightly psychedelic, with enough left turns to stop the stadium-sized chorus from ever feeling too obvious or overly familiar, in all the right ways, of course.
