Some gorgeous atmospheric jazz to send you floating into the weekend
This month I got a preview of ‘The Garden‘ — the debut full-length album from Portland-based producer and multi-instrumentalist, Rudy Klobas (aka POSY).
In 2021, Klobas joined the scene with his debut EP entitled ‘Abroad.’ The EP was inspired by a period of time spent traveling Japan in early 2019. Throughout the course of the month-long trip, Rudy carried around a portable recorder, capturing various sounds that caught his ear. That collection of found sounds eventually became the foundation for the EP with each track utilizing a variety of field recordings to create a unique blend of organic and electronic textures.
Then in 2023 Klobas released the ‘I Know A Place EP‘ which explored more jazz influences. Further embracing an analog approach to production, Rudy utilized reel-to-reel tape and entirely live instrumentation to create lush, cinematic soundscapes inspired by contemporary lo-fi pioneers like J Dilla and Nujabes.
To announce his debut full-length record, POSY has released the lead single off the album. The track is called “Mount Yufu” and it features LA-based multi-instrumentalist, Seb Zillner. The song kicks off with a sprinkling of Rhodes before bringing in hand percussion and a light drum break while an understated acoustic guitar line floats besides beautiful whispering flutes from Seb Zillner weaving in and out of the track.
Have a listen to “Mount Yufu” below, and keep an ear out for ‘The Garden’ when it is released later this year on Bastard Jazz Recordings.
