Tanukichan

You all need to check out the new indie surf-rock band Tanukichan. It’s the solo project of Hanna Van Loon from Trials and Ways. She has teamed up with Scott Brown and Aaron Gold from Astronauts etc. to bring us her first single entitled “Bitter Medicine.” The track is the first single off of her upcoming debut EP called Radio Love.

As for the origin of the band name… a Tanuki is a Japanese racoon dog. “Chan” is affectionate in Japanese. So Tanukichan is like a little Japanese racoon dog.

“I think the Tanuki is my spirit animal,” says Van Loon when describing why she chose the name for her project. There is a lot of mythology surrounding Tanukis, identifying them as shapeshifters and tricksters. They are also portrayed with enormous balls quite often.

Check out Tanukichan’s debut single “Bitter Medicine” below, and look out for Radio Love this summer.
