Warpaint: New Album

Warpaint’s new album, The Fool, is expected to release this coming Monday on Rough Trade Records. This week you’ve been able to pre-order the album on their site.

They’ve been pretty big on the West Coast for a few years now, and I think they’ve become more well known after signing on as the opening act for The XX. Personally, I discovered them pretty randomly after someone passed me “Elephants;” a track off their first album. It hits you with something of a hyper-melodic birage of sound.

The new album somehow captures the same mind-soothing melodies but now in a darker tone. It’s not depressing per-se, but more …sad, experienced. Fluxblog used a great analogy of a broken relationship to describe the feeling you get from my favorite track on the new album, “Undertow,” but I think it does a good job of summing up the whole album:

It’s like “someone at the end of a relationship, addressing this person they still love, but from a distance …it doesn’t sound like there’s much room for forgiveness and change. The bad patterns emerge, they don’t really go away — not any time soon, anyway.”

I don’t know if it’s just because it is October, and Falls foreshadowing of Winter is looming. When days are shorter, relationships become broken, and people generally go into a sort of social hibernation, but I know these four girls (who formed the band on Valentines day ironically enough) know heart-ache.
