Cat Ryan dig into the archives for their new single: ‘Free From This’
British indie-pop outfit Cat Ryan are reaching back to where it all started with their new single: “Free From This.” It’s a bright, punchy blast of surf-soaked indie-pop that’s been waiting patiently in the vault for its moment.
Despite only just getting an official release, the track is something of an origin story for the band. Frontwoman and founder Mary-Anne Murphy wrote it years ago, and immediately felt like she’d stumbled onto the sound she’d been searching for.
“’Free From This’ is where Cat Ryan began,” Mary-Anne explains when talking about the new single. “When this song came together I remember thinking — this is the sound I didn’t even know I was looking for.”
That lightbulb moment would eventually shape the whole Cat Ryan project, from the name to the direction of the music. Since forming the band in Newcastle, “Free From This” has become a regular fixture in their live set, so finally getting it properly recorded feels like closing the loop.
Sometimes the old ones are worth digging out.
