JJ & The Mood dance their way to inner peace on ‘Gonna Sleep Good Tonight’

If meditation isn’t really your thing, JJ & The Mood have another suggestion: turn the music up and dance until you’ve got nothing left.

The LA-based project is built around cartoonist and vocalist Jack Sjogren and Cincinnati songwriter and producer Joey Joesph. We first came across the disco-pop project in 2021 when they released their single, “How Many Times.” This month they return with a gloriously loose-limbed mix of disco, indie funk, and alternative dance music called “Gonna Sleep Good Tonight.”

There’s certainly no shortage of movement on the new track. Sjogren’s half-sung, half-spoken vocal skips over the groove with an almost cartoonish enthusiasm, while Joesph’s production keeps things warm, live, and slightly scruffy around the edges. It feels less like pristine studio disco and more like stumbling into a party that’s already properly kicked off.

“Lyrically, I wanted to capture the innate spirituality of being on the dance floor,” Sjogren explains, describing the way physical movement can bring the same kind of peace as meditation.

That idea carries through into the self-directed video, which sees Sjogren imagining himself auditioning in a town hall theatre in front of a panel of painfully serious judges. Slowly, the groove wins them over and the whole room descends into a communal dance party.

It’s silly, colourful and knowingly over-the-top, but that’s also kind of the point. “Gonna Sleep Good Tonight” is less concerned with looking cool than feeling good. And sometimes that’s exactly what disco should be.
