Ian Grant takes broken beat to new levels with his Resident Advisor mix
Did you know that the kids these days are calling broken beat “bruk” now? I feel so old. To be honest, I still call it “break beat” (probably incorrectly).
Anyway, my dated knowledge of the genre aside, one of the kings of bruk has just released his Resident Advisor podcast — RA.897. His name is Ian Grant (aka IG Culture), and his RA mix combines elements of jazz, hip hop, deep house, and Afrobeat to create a masterclass in the future of bruk. There are cerebral jazz cuts, Nigerian cruise music, percussive UK garage, 2-step swing, dancehall dub, and a dozen or so remixes of cult classics. This is the house that Grant build, and he’s built it using bruks. (you know… it sounds like “bricks” ….)
