Matt Soverns releases a new EP which sees the dancier side of his sound

Indianapolis-based singer/songwriter Matt Soverns is the Piano Guy. Do a quick search online for Soverns and you are going to get back images of him with his piano — piano on the street, piano at home, piano at a music hall with Matt wearing a tuxedo. Matt Soverns is the Piano Guy.

But calling him the piano guy is not really doing his music justice. Sure, he has some lovely piano-led music that pulls inspiration from Billy Joel, Paul McCartney, Elton John, and other great piano composers…. but he has a range and sense of music that combines elements of rock, theatrical, and even indie electronic music into an eclectic body of work.

His 2024 release, Phoning It In, is a great example of this. A track like “Saturn’s Return” is a beautifully gentle piano ballad while a track like “Everything Bagel” or “Tell Me Why” are funky rock cuts.

This year Matt has released a new spinoff of the album called Phoning It In (Dropped Calls) which includes some unreleased versions of the original album and further demonstrates his range with a few dancefloor remixes (including a electronic mix of “Sons of Mine” and “Tell Me Why”). As Matt puts it, the Dance Remix of “Tell Me Why” is a tune for “party playlists, workout playlists, radio bumpers, elevators, shopping malls, gay bars, sushi restaurants, and sporting events.” Pretty versatile then?

“I have this fantasy that EDM artists will hear my song and love it so much that they make a whole bunch of dance remixes of it,” admits Matt. “But I don’t have that kind of clout. So, I just skipped the begging and pitching and did it myself. I asked my friend and producer Ryan if I could come into the studio and open up the original mix of “Tell Me Why” and play with it. I had a blast cutting it up and making a version of the song that was more dance-y like I imagined in my fantasy.”

Glad you took the jump and indulged the dancier side of your sound Matt.
