Slacker Radio

Slacker Radio is an online radio station that happens to have the most personalized content of any radio service. They combine the knowledge of the nation’s leading music experts from every genre and your own personal taste to create perfect radio stations. You can listen to custom music, news, sports, and comedy stations for free, while subscribers have on-demand access to specific songs, albums and playlists.

I was able to sit down with one of the founders and Senior Director of Slacker Radio, Scott Riggs, while I was at lollapalooza this year to talk about the future of traditional AM/FM radio and what is in store for Slacker in the next few years.

Since Slacker Radio has broad service and audience they naturally have more competition. Pandora is their largest competition in the online radio areana, but then they have to go head to head with Spotify for on-demand music. And don’t forget Traditional AM/FM radio as well as satellite radio. Scott didn’t seem phased by all this competition.

“We have our hands in many different outlets so we are going up against Satellite radio, traditional radio, Pandora, Spotify… but at our core we are a radio station. We want to offer the best radio experience possible.”

And I have to agree, they do offer the best radio experience out there. And there is one big reason for that: people get tired of having content forced on them the way traditional radio pushes content. “Traditional radio is dead,” says Riggs, “I believe FM radio will move towards more talk radio. It’s the only form of radio that offers meaningful content.”

Slacker has been adding stations and features very consistently, improving their service for the past few years pretty regularly. Many sports channels where just added with the addition of ESPN radio, a whole channel of comedy stations was added, and ABC News has partnered with Slacker to deliver dozens of news channels as well. So when I asked what the future had in store for Slacker Radio I was only mildly surprised that there were more innovations on the way. The most exciting of which was a possible partnership with car manufacturers where you would be able to have Slacker Radio come with your new car….
