Throwback Thursday: Batonga

[youtuber youtube=’http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=duiyobfigfo’]

Today I want to take you back…way back. Back to 1991.

This is when Angélique Kidjo released “Batonga.” It’s one of those classic 90s dance tracks but it has a wonderful West African influence that makes is unique. The video is incredibly 90s as well.

Angélique herself is a Grammy award winning singer songwriter from Benin, Africa. From what I can gather, “Batonga” is a word Angélique made up as a response to taunts she received at school. She later went up to set up her own foundation named Batonga which aimed to promote secondary school and higher education for girls in Africa.

Interesting fact: Angélique Kidjo’s full name is Angélique Kpasseloko Hinto Hounsinou Kandjo Manta Zogbin Kidjo.
