Spiny Norman creates a sound that is psychedelic, vibrant, and unapologetically unique

We just got sent a couple of singles from a Dutch band called Spiny Norman that pack a psychedelic punch of funky soul music. Named after an imaginary hedgehog from a Monty Python sketch, Spiny Norman aims to appeal to the imagination with a varied repertoire. It’s easy to listen to, easy to dance to, and never one-dimensional.

The first song that caught my attention is called “C:\Seduction”. It pulls you in with this deep (seductive even) male voice. It’s one of those songs that I initially hover over the “skip” button on the first listen, only to find myself hitting play again when the song is finished. It’s one of those songs that feels both familiar and strange. It has you thinking: “I don’t know why I like this song, but I want to hear it again.” Maybe it’s the genre-blurring instrumental that opens up into a funky groove. Or maybe it is the hypnotic blend of surf rock, Thai funk, and trip-hop. Whatever it is, it is hard not to get hooked to this.

Their latest single, “Dune,” is an instrumental track that crosses indie with a bit of soulful psychedelic. Electric guitars, pulsing drums, dreamy synths and an array of exotic percussion all add up to a song that transports you to a paradise of sand and sun.
