VooDoo: Day 1

Friday started off raining, and then got cold, but as the temperature dropped, the bands got more animated and the crowds continued to grow. I was lucky enough to catch some great shows, starting at 10:15am with Achachay! from Austin, TX. This year, the smaller stages were the places to be, with great bands such as the ever contradictory Dangermuffin, and the absurdly costumed group, The Static Jacks, dressed as the Dead Rabbits Gang from Gangs of New York. The Wombats put on an energized show, stealing costume pieces from the crowd as they went through the set. Le Plur boasted some great, if lesser known DJs, with The Bangerz earlier in the day, and by the time Major Lazer hit the stage the neon clad crowd was impenetrable. Fitz and the Tantrums put on a great show, with the crowd moving just as much as Noelle’s hips and tambourine. Over at the main VooDoo stage, Mates of State sounded amazing, but would have been better suited to a more intimate stage, as would Band of Horses. My Chemical Romance ended my first night of Halloweekend, the only band of the day that really required the large stage. As a band that brings back memories of angsty pre-teen years, I would have liked to hear more of their older songs, but they were not a bad end to an all around fucking good day.
Aside from seeing all these great bands, I also had the chance to sit down and talk with the amazing members of Achachay!, Fitz and the Tantrums, Dangermuffin, The Bangerz, and The Static Jacks. Interviews to come soon.
