The New LoFi

Ten Years

Buraka Som Sistema

FRIDAYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY. It’s so nice out. I’m just bursting at the seams! Time to get your dance on.

I’ve been searching for what will be the new dance move for Summer 2011. What will replace the Superman, crumping? the.. the Dougie? If I had to guess, it would be the New Orlean’s Bounce. I suppose it doesn’t really matter since my whiteboy ass can’t make moves like that anyway, but still. I need to be on top of the summer dance move’s and shit. On my search I was pointed to the (apparently very popular) Walmart video where some nice young ladies are teaching Walmart customers how to perform the New Orleans Bounce while shopping. It will blow your mind. They are barely speaking English in the video, and it’s pretty much exclusively ass shaking shots, yeah they have over half a million views… i suppose that’s not surprising.

Eventually, my search led me to some legitimately good music coming out of Brazil Portugal. A group called Buraka Som Sistema. They put the above video together for their track “Hangover” and even though the lyrics are in Portuguese and there is a similar amount of ass shaking, it somehow seems way more coherent than the Walmart video.

It’s Afro-dance that goes bang. It’s perfect for getting your bounce going on a sunny Friday. I think of it as the new Baille funk and from what I can tell Buraka Som Sistema is leading the charge.

They have some good remixes and covers as well. I’m including a reinterpretation they did of Neneh Cherry’s 80’s classic “Buffalo Stance” and a dope remix of Lykke Li’s “Dance Dance Dance.”
