The Christmas Waltz

It’s not really Christmas without the music and a few songs really set the tone. One of those songs for me is “The Christmas Waltz.” Originally written by Sammy Cahn and Julie Styne for Frank Sinatra “The Christmas Waltz” was recorded in 1954 and has been giving little girls and boys the Christmas goose bumps ever since.

Irish singer/song writer, Lisa Hannigan recently rerecorded the song for the Irish National Postal Service and I must say that it is a pretty faithful and Christmasy reinterpretation. Lisa’s version sticks to the song but doesn’t imitate which is always the mark of a good cover. Where Frank’s version sings out, Lisa’s whispers. Sinatra is backed by a big 1950’s orchestra while Hannigan is complemented by a gentle tip-toeing piano. You feel like you are strolling around a snowy Christmas town in Frank’s rendition while in Lisa’s, you are taken on a sleigh ride through a snowy Christmas forest. It’s just the kind of perfectly executed tribute you want to hear out of such a classic piece.

The best part is that all the proceeds raised from the sale of Lisa Hannigan’s track will go directly to Simon Community to help tackle homelessness in Ireland (in true Christmas spirit). Support the cause by going to The Christmas Waltz Bandcamp page and buying the track for €1
