Cronicas de la Revolucion Cubana
This is a bit completely off track from what we’ve been listening to and writing about but while doing some research on poet Pablo Neruda, I stumbled on this album. I haven’t been able to find much info on it but in short it’s a compilation of old Cuban songs which as the title suggests, chronicles the Cuban Revolution . . . I’m really loving these songs, especially some of the songs by Carlos Puebla.
Carlos Puebla was a member of the old trova movement and specialized in Cuban boleros (slow-tempo/ballad-esque songs) and nationalistic songs. He was often called El Cantor de la Revolución or “the singer of the revolution”. He traveled the world with his songs and was seen as both an ambassador for Cuban music and Cuba as a whole. One of his most famous songs, Hasta Siempre, Comandante, was a declaration of love for Che Guevara. Hasta Siempre has since been covered by countless artists from all over the world, most notably by Buena Vista Social Club.
