Yumi Zuoma: Barricade

With the physical barriers that separated bandmates Christie Simpson, Sam Perry, Charlie Ryder and Josh Burgess all but eliminated, soft-pop extraordinaires Yumi Zouma knew their first full-length would double-up on the intimacy of their previous work. Already sporting a tremendous track record, Yoncalla, due May 27th via Cascine, hopes to build on the band’s mounting fanfare.

Their latest single ‘Barricade’ is joyous and explosive, lush harmonies and driving synth lines saturate the band’s familiar pastel minimalism. The artistic synchronicity between band members is palpable. Burgess explains: “Barricade was the first song that was really collaborative for us. I remember sitting on the floor in Charlie’s apartment playing an unplugged bass, Charlie with an unplugged guitar and Christie humming out melodies. I hadn’t worked on a track like that since I was in college.”

Although the recording process marks a return to the bedroom simplicity that birthed indie pop, ‘Barricade’ is a fresh and robust entry bound to add some color to 2016’s musical landscape. Yoncalla will undoubtedly be Yumi Zouma’s strongest entry to date.
