I WANNA ROCK V1
I was working on some type treatments for a project at work and after taking a step back, I realized that they were feeling very 80s “heavy metal” bandish. The sharp and angular custom type I was creating referenced logos from bands like anthrax, judas priest, slayer and ride the lightning era metallica. At first I was turned off by it and thought “WTF am I doing? I’m really losing my mind???!!! This shit is the worst!?” Then I stepped away from it for a little and when I came back to it, I actually started liking what I saw.
Now, when discussing music with ANYONE over the last 25 years, I would usually leave out the part when I would plaster my room with pictures from CIRCUS Magazine and my tape collection (yes, actual cassette tapes) was full of guitar solo heros. That said, it’s 2010 and my 6th sense is telling me that it’s time I came out of the metal closet and fessed up because metal is about to blow up. If you don’t believe me, maybe this will change your mind. Ronnie James Dio actually came to me in a dream and told me himself.
At this point you’re thinking, “80’s metal? Really? Horrible. It’ll never come back.” You’re wrong! I’ve reflected on this idea of mine and realized that slowly but surely it’s been creeping back into our lives without us even realizing it. For instance, every time I go to a hipster bar, someone plays a vintage classic like “I was made for loving you” by Kiss. Gossip even directly appropriated the melody from that track for their 2009 song “2012”. Random? I think not. It’s all part of Ronnie’s master plan. Then, this weekend I was in a skateboard shop and the video they were playing had an Iron Maiden song in it. Laughing, I said to my friend “Is that Iron Maiden man?” A 12 year old in the store heard me and answered before my friend could even respond, “Yeah, Number of the Beast is awesome!” Really, I thought to myself???!! Then last night I was at a party at in indoor skatepark and the playlist boasted Judas Priest, Motley Crue, Poison, Dokken and sure enough Iron Maiden. Could this really be happening? Then I realized that companies like Armani Exchange are pushing “burnout tees” and the “Rocker Chic” trend. At a higher price point, Diane von Furstenberg embraced heavy metal in her fall 2010 collection preview. Also, bands like Sleigh Bells, Wolfmother, Racontuers and The Dead Weather have become dinner party faves with their hard hitting guitars and screeching vocals. Could this really be happening? In one word, SI (yes in Spanish)!
