Your LoFix #17 – calming remixes
Welcome to The LoFix, a column to share some LoFi & Chill Hop that I’ve recently discovered and love. Giving you that fix of chill; something we all need regularly. And if you’re feeling the tracks, do share them with your friends.
In the seventeenth edition of the series I’ve crafted a selection of calming remixes from ambient to a subtle touch of hip-hop giving each track a new take on the original.
Kicking off with something a bit different, Ryder has flipped “Text Me Back” from Skepta in his final ‘skeptacore‘ trilogy that also see’s the original artist jump on the production to give it an official blessing too. The ambient leaning night time vibe is something I blast in my headphones regularly when venturing through the big smoke, under the city lights. Dropping last year, this has me eagerly anticipating his next release and wanting more of Ryders unique sound.
golden era has built a name for himself in the lofi cover and remix space, with over 200 covers and 6 million streams of his ‘High’ Remix alone. Teaming up with the London based duo that is Fika & Absent Mind Recs to re-deliver High in a different way. A very gentle build up that lets Fika‘s vocals invite you into the song, it’s electronic tones kick in and the melodic synth floats through the track to keep you high on this beautiful sound.
The legend that is MF DOOM needs no introduction, as soon as he kicks in with rap you will instantly recognise the legends distinctive voice. Another pioneer joins in on this track with FloFilz on the remix duties, a deadly combination right here! Nothing is overdone with this remake, the piano gently flows but adds a dope melody to the track and allows DOOM to do his thing.
That fat kick has my head bopping right away and when the soulful tones of the singer hits you know this is the golden era vibe. Masta Ace follows bringing them oldschool 90s rap with Fresh Fest and deep synth tones work in unison, Mono:Massive doesn’t need to complicate this remix and has provided the perfect backdrop for the vocals to take centre stage.
Taken from Chillhop Music’s Winter compilation, the Rotterdam beatmaker that is Philanthrope gives you a chance to Let Go with his calming instrumental remix. A perfect balance between the piano melody and rolling drum pattern that is a serine setting for a night time walk (ideally in the winter snow). Be sure to check out his Nine To Five label that is pushing the boundaries and creativity for talented artists too.
