Beautifully composed indie-electronic music inspired by daily dad life
As a Millennial girl dad myself, I’ve reached that stage in my life where the music I consume is pretty far removed from pop music. Sure I still love the 90s hip hop I grew up with. Old-school house. Grunge. Indie. But now with a child who is discovering all different kinds of new music on the radio, I see the music from my childhood through a whole new lens. The music I like is starting to feel like “classic rock.”
Then there are musicians who can somehow marry the past and present with their sound; playfully celebrate nostalgia with a playful twist that makes it feel fresh for today. That’s the sweet spot that Jake Juba (aka Retro Kid) seems to acheive with his music. His sound feels like it was inspired by 90s arcades, mixtape moods, and Saturday-morning cartoons. Blending organic drums, synths, and catchy melodic chops.
And he does all this as a young dad himself. For his latest single, “Think I Know,” he captures the humour and honesty of daily dad life. The song was inspired by his three-year-old son, Billy — a kid who knows exactly what he wants: cake, dinosaurs, and Bluey. What more could a kid want?
“Think I Know” is the first single off of Retro Kid’s upcoming EP. Look out for a new track (and dinosaur) to be released in the coming months.
