The Weeknd

My buddy Shak swung by this morning and started talking R&B to me. Now, R&B is not my favorite genre. In fact it’s probably my least favorite. He put on the new(ish) mixtape that The Weeknd put out called “House of Balloons” and I decided to change my mind.

The genre has been called PBR&B (a play on Pabst Blue Ribbon beer, the hipster beer of choice) aligning the sound as the hipster’s R&B. It’s a mixture of downtempo, trip-hop with R&B vocals. Think Frank Ocean or James Blake.

The Weeknd is Toronto Native Abel Tesfaye on the mic and Jeremy Rose laying down beats. Drake has been pushing him on his site and you might have heard the single “High For This” on the Trailer for Season 8 of Entourage.
