September 2019 Mixtape
What’s up mixtape aficionados? September is here, and with it comes a new mixtape. This month’s mix includes sound from all over the place. From Scandinavia to Southern California. From South America to East Africa.
There is a very world music feel to this months mix. And by “world music” I don’t mean the genre. There is just a wide range of sound that doesn’t necessarily come from the Westernized catalogue of pop music.
The mixtape begins with a band from London called Snapped Ankles. Their music was introduced to me by fellow TNLF contributor Chris B last month, and their album “Stunning Luxury” has been on heavy rotation here at The New LoFi for the last few weeks. The four-piece band are also known to dress up like trees on stage when they play live. It sounds pretty bonkers, but then again, their music is pretty bonkers.
The mix starts off with the first single off of their latest album. It’s called “Pestisound (Moving out)” and it’s hard not to do a little hop around the room when you are listening to it. I’ve also closed out the mixtape with one of their songs called “Come play the trees” which embraces more of their electronic side. so the mix begins and ends with Snapped Ankles. Most mix makers wouldn’t put two songs from the same band on one mix, much less start and end a mix with the same band, but that’s how we do it here on the TNLF Mixtape.
Snapped Ankles are followed up by a track by Tommy Guerrero. Tommy was a famous skateboarder in the 80s and 90s but now he’s making some incredible guitar music inspired by the deserts of the south west United states. When I first came across Tommy’s music, I thought “this name sounds familiar” but I couldn’t remember where I’d heard his music. After a little research, I realized it was the same Tommy Guerrero that I had grown up to watching on skateboard videos with Tony Hawk and Rodney Mullen. I couldn’t believe that a guy who was at the top of his game in one thing like skateboarding, was now an incredible musician. Amazing.
I’m including a track off of his album The Endless Road called “El Camino Negro.” For me, the slow wandering guitar summons up tumble weeds, cowboys and the desert. The mixtape also has songs from Klaves, Sommer, Invisible Minds and a single from Maria Usbeck’s new album, Envejeciendo.
There is a sweet little electronic interlude in the middle of the mix as well. It’s from London-based producers Krywald & Farrer and it includes two samples from their “Persies Edits.” The Persies Edits are a collection of EPs that feature an selection of reworked dance floor gems. these are like old disco tracks, or east african party tunes that Krywald & Farrer beef up and spin into house. What’s even cooler is that all of the EPs are white label vinyls… each one only saw 500 go to press. Nuts!
