The “Somewhere” mix by Xavier Borghini

While other blogs are releasing playlists by professional artists, we thought it might be interesting to release some of the music that the amateurs are hyping — specifically amateurs in the media and advertising industry. There’s something about people who work in media. Most of us here at The New LoFi work in media or advertising and we’ve found that a disproportionate amount of people in the industry have a secret passion for music. We’re all really just closet musicians, DJs and producers.

Each month we’ll be highlighting the musical tastes of someone that works in media or advertising in a regular column here called: “What We Are Listening To.”

This month we were sent a fantastic mix from French graphic designer, Xavier Borghini. After hearing his “Somewhere” mix, it’s clear that graphic design is not his only talent.

The New LoFi: Your mix is called “Somewhere” — is there somewhere in particular you want someone to go when listening? How do you want people to use your mix?

Xavier Borghini: First, get lost somewhere. Anywhere. Then, plug your headphones in… and press play.

TNLF: What inspired you to make this mix? What is the theme?

XB: I tried my best to compile my favourite tracks I would normally listen to when I am on my own. Music I would listen to when I’m walking or cycling late at night in London.

This playlist is about, deep deep beats. And maybe some strange noise too. It might make you feel like you’re alone, but that’s the aim! These days, I think we are sharing way too much of ourself with the others — A bit of loneliness is exactly what I am trying to create there. So embrace this hour of solitude.

TNLF: That actually sounds really refreshing. Is there anything else we should know about the mix?

XB: I don’t really want to tell you more about artists. Some of them just blew my mind with the way they arrange their music. Even some of the videos are amazing. For example, the camera work on the Andy Stott video is stunning. You should check the videos out too.
